Twitter is one of the first things we see when we open our eyes in the morning. From news to memes, it’s where we interact with the world … digitally, at least.

Unfortunately, if you’re traveling to countries like China or Iran, you may have trouble accessing Twitter. That’s because these countries block access to the never-ending scroll. Fortunately, VPNs are one way you can bypass government restrictions and open your Twitter feed with no hassle. Here are our top picks.

Detailed List of the Best VPNs for Twitter in 2021

  • 1. ExpressVPN - Best VPN for Twitter Overall

    Editor's Rating
    9.5
    /10

If you’re in a country like Turkmenistan, where the government has a monopoly on the media and international social media sites like Twitter are blocked,1 ExpressVPN will help you out. It’s a great VPN no matter what devices you’re on, with over 2,000 servers in 148 locations around the world. Simply connect to one of ExpressVPN’s servers to access Twitter, or any other social networking sites you see fit.

    What We Like
    • Kill switch
    • Large server network
    • Dynamic IP addresses
    • 256-bit encryption
    What We Don’t Like
    • No multi-hop encryption
    • Only five simultaneous connections
    • No phone customer support
    • No free trial

    Solid Privacy

Where a VPN company is headquartered matters. ExpressVPN, for example, is headquartered in the British Virgin Islands, a nonmember of the Five Eyes, Nine Eyes, and 14 Eyes. What does that mean? Even if you use Twitter in a country where it’s illegal, a Five Eyes member can’t force the company to tell it what you did online.

Even if a country asked, ExpressVPN has nothing to share; the privacy policy states that the company doesn’t log web activity or IP addresses. Instead, all of your data will be safe and sound within ExpressVPN’s tunnel, encrypted with AES-256, the standard across the industry.

    High Speeds

These days, we need news delivered constantly, which means that high speeds are essential for a VPN. Since 52 percent of users go on Twitter daily, that’s a lot of posts, retweets, and likes to go through every day, and we’re the first to admit our impatience.

Fortunately, with ExpressVPN, we didn’t see significant slowdowns when we tested the VPN on our MacBook Pro and our Windows VivoBook. We saw no changes in latency, download speed, and upload speed of more than 50 percent, which is better than the industry average. No wonder ExpressVPN is both the best VPN for Mac and the best VPN for Windows!

NOTE: The most affordable way to get ExpressVPN is to sign up for a year, as the monthly cost will go down to $8.32. If you pay for one month at a time, the cost is $12.95. Learn more about ExpressVPN pricing and ExpressVPN deals.

    Large Server Network

Need a U.K. IP address? How about a VPN for Hong Kong, or even a VPN for France? ExpressVPN’s large network of servers will have you covered no matter what continent you find yourself on. There are servers in 148 locations, making ExpressVPN an excellent VPN for travel in general.

Especially if you’re in a country with internet censorship, ExpressVPN is what you need to attain not only online freedom, but also online anonymity to protect yourself from government interference.

  • 2. NordVPN - Best VPN for Twitter on Android

    Editor's Rating
    9.3
    /10

We’re plenty guilty of scrolling through Twitter on our phones, not even realizing what we’re doing. So, of course, you need a great VPN for mobile, and NordVPN has you covered on Androids.

When we used the VPN on our Androids, we had no trouble finding a server nearby and connecting. Within seconds, what was previously blocked was now our Twitter feed in all of its glory. It’s not surprising that NordVPN is one of the best Android VPNs around!

    What We Like
    • Headquarters in Panama, a nonmember country
    • No logging of web activity or IP addresses
    • Compatibility with torrenting and Netflix
    • User-friendly Android app
    What We Don’t Like
    • Static IP addresses
    • Tons of latency on Windows PC
    • Only six devices per subscription
    • No free version or trial

    Multi-Hop Encryption

If your reason for using a VPN is related to privacy, then you’ll appreciate that NordVPN has multi-hop encryption, or double VPN. This means that NordVPN encrypted our web activity (mostly Twitter) and our IP addresses multiple times through multiple servers. The more encryption, the better protected we are online, which is important if you’re in a litigious country like China. Combine that with NordVPN’s headquarters in Panama, a nonmember of the Five Eyes, and your secret Twitter use is safe with NordVPN.

    Great for Streaming

While we’re scrolling through Twitter, we often have something playing in the background, be it the latest scam documentary on Prime Video or … well, the latest scam documentary on Hulu (we’re really into scam documentaries, in case you couldn’t tell). So if you’re like us and you need a streaming VPN, NordVPN is at your service. It works with the following streaming platforms:

    • Prime Video
    • Disney+
    • Hulu
    • Netflix

Not all VPNs let you change your Netflix region. In fact, some streaming platforms block VPNs, so they’re not all the best VPNs for Netflix and similar services. Fortunately, NordVPN has over 5,000 servers, which means a ton of IP addresses to choose from that streaming sites haven’t blocked. And since we shared the IP addresses with other NordVPN users, no one could tell that we spent all night watching “LuLaRich.” No regrets!

    Affordable Pricing

Need a cheap VPN? If you sign up for two years with NordVPN, the cost goes down to only $3.71 a month, paid upfront as $89.04. Sure, that may seem like a lot of money upfront, but for two years of protection, it’s negligible. Of course, if you’re not ready for a long-term commitment (hey, we get it), you can sign up for a month for $11.95 or a year for $59.04, which breaks down to $4.92 a month.

Length of contract 1 month 1 year 2 years
    Cost per month $11.95 $4.92 $3.71
    Total amount billed $11.95 $59.04 $89.04

Things are even cheaper if you take advantage of NordVPN deals or NordVPN Black Friday deals. Dive deeper into NordVPN subscriptions on our pricing page.

  • 3. IPVanish - Fastest VPN for Android

    Editor's Rating
    9.2
    /10

When we’re waiting for a train, an oat milk latte, or an Uber, without thinking, we pull out our iPhones and open Twitter. But maybe you’re in a country with geo-restrictions, or maybe you just don’t want anyone to know how many times a day you check your ex’s profile.

Regardless, if you need an iPhone VPN, IPVanish is a solid choice. The iOS app has a 4.5-star rating, deservedly in our opinion. We had no trouble setting up our iPhone VPN and connecting to one of IPVanish’s over 1,110 servers.

    What We Like
    • 4.5-star iOS app
    • No logs of web activity or IP address
    • Access to ESPN+, HBO, MLB.TV, etc.
    • Unlimited devices per subscription
    What We Don’t Like
    • Headquarters in the U.S., a Five Eyes member
    • Not that many servers
    • No Netflix access
    • Mediocre Android app
    IPVanish Desktop App
    IPVanish Desktop App

    Generous Packages

It’s important to use a VPN on public Wi-Fi networks, but it’s also important to use a VPN at home, at work, and on the go. Basically, if you want privacy, using a VPN is the best way to do it (and yes, VPNs are better than proxy servers, but that’s a whole other story).

What we’re trying to say is that we used IPVanish not only on our iPhones, but also on our Androids, our Windows VivoBook, our MacBook Pro, and as many other devices as we pleased. In fact, we could use as many devices as we wanted under one IPVanish subscription, with up to 10 connections at the same time. This makes IPVanish’s costs significantly more affordable, as you won’t have to buy multiple subscriptions for your entire family.

    Few Slowdowns

We didn’t just test IPVanish on our iPhones. We also tested it on our MacBook Pro and our Windows VivoBook and found relatively little difference with the VPN connected versus not connected. Of course, all VPNs encrypt our web activity, meaning that some slowdowns are part of the package. But with only 7 percent more latency on our PC and 14 percent more latency on our MacBook, IPVanish’s slowdowns were minimal.

Speed testing for IPVanish Mac Windows
Ping without VPN (in ms) 14 14
Ping with VPN (in ms) 16 15
    Difference 14% 7%
Download speed without VPN (in Mbps) 37 70
Download speed with VPN (in Mbps) 32 26
    Difference -15% -62%
Upload speed without VPN (in Mbps) 26 42
Upload speed with VPN (in Mbps) 21 31
    Difference -18% -25%

    Dynamic IP Addresses

The major difference between static and dynamic IP addresses is that, while static addresses stay the same, dynamic IP addresses change every time we connect to a server. Fortunately, IPVanish has dynamic addresses, which makes it a lot harder to follow around online.

Changing our IP address hides our real IP address, which means that no one can see our approximate geolocation. If someone knows our real IP address, they can send us spam, restrict Twitter access (God forbid), or even prevent us from online gaming with a VPN. Needless to say, we didn’t run into those issues with IPVanish.

  • 4. CyberGhost - Best VPN for Twitter With Split Tunneling

    Editor's Rating
    9.0
    /10

Not everything you do online needs to be protected with an encrypted tunnel. For example, if you’re on Pinterest in one window and on Twitter in another, you might not want to route everything through the VPN tunnel. In that case, you’ll want a VPN with split tunneling, like CyberGhost.

With CyberGhost, we routed some of our traffic through the VPN’s encrypted tunnel and some to our internet service provider (ISP) directly. This made for less bandwidth and, subsequently, higher speeds. No need to watch our Twitter feed buffer for what feels like hours!

    What We Like
    • Romania-based company
    • Kill switch
    • Torrenting
    • Split tunneling through Smart Rules
    What We Don’t Like
    • It logs IP addresses.
    • Netflix won’t work everywhere.
    • The free trial is only 24 hours.
    • It has a sparse presence in Asian countries.
    CyberGhost App
    CyberGhost App

    Kill Switch

Just like life, with VPNs, we need a plan B, and that comes in the form of a kill switch, sometimes called a network lock feature. If we’re on Twitter illegally and our VPN fails, that means that our ISP can see our web activity … right?

Wrong. Because CyberGhost has a kill switch, it will shut down our Twitter browsers and apps, and anything else we’ve got going on online. The kill switch comes with all of CyberGhost’s apps for Windows, Android, Mac, and iOS.

FYI: Once your VPN connection returns, all of the kill switch’s blockages will reverse, including any video calls and downloads.

    Romania Headquarters

Romania isn’t at the top of our travel list (no offense). However, it’s a great place to headquarter a VPN company like CyberGhost, which is based in Bucharest. CyberGhost’s location means that our information is safe with the company, as Romania falls outside of the Five Eyes’ jurisdiction.

This makes up for the fact that CyberGhost logs our IP address, along with when and where we connected to a server. Even if the U.S. asks CyberGhost for our web activity or IP address, legally, CyberGhost doesn’t have to comply. So while we wish it didn’t log our IP addresses in the first place, at least it’s based in a Five Eyes nonmember country.

    Discounts for Long-Term Contracts

With CyberGhost, it pays to commit. After we paid only $2.25 a month for the first two years, CyberGhost gave us the third year for only $58.50, a slight increase but still only $4.88 a month. CyberGhost’s pricing allows one-month, six-month, and 24-month contracts.

    Term length (in months) 1 6 24
    Cost per month $12.99 $6.39 $2.25
    Total amount billed $12.99 $38.34 $58.50
Annual price after the first bill $155.88 $76.68 $58.50
Monthly cost after the first bill $12.99 $6.39 $4.88

To save even more, be sure to take advantage of CyberGhost deals, not to mention CyberGhost Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals.

  • 5. Surfshark - Best Free VPN for Twitter

    Editor's Rating
    8.6
    /10

Whether you need a VPN for a month or a minute, you can use Surfshark for free. That’s because all of Surfshark’s subscriptions include a 30-day free trial as well as a 45-day money-back guarantee.

We didn’t even have to put a card down. Within seconds of downloading Surfshark, we were on our Twitter accounts privately, the way things should be. All in all, we’re huge fans of this free virtual private network.

    What We Like
    • Multi-hop routing to encrypt your traffic and online activities multiple times
    • Headquarters in Five Eyes nonmember country
    • 30-day free trial
    • Great mobile apps and security features
    What We Don’t Like
    • Static IP addresses
    • No support over the phone
    • Latency increase of over 2,700 percent on Windows
    • No annual plan option
    Surfshark Browser
    Surfshark Browser

    AES-256 Encryption

We’ve mentioned AES-256 a few times, as it’s the current standard in encryption. Surfshark uses AES-256 to hide our Twitter usage, plus whatever else we have going on online and our IP addresses. Unlike 128-bit encryption, which is outdated, 256-bit is the reason Surfshark is so secure, not to mention its strict logging policy. Throw in a British Virgin Islands headquarters and Surfshark is a great VPN for privacy.

Surfshark One: VPN and Antivirus Software

While VPNs are the key to bypassing geo-restrictions and accessing Twitter, they’re not the be-all and end-all of digital security. To stay truly protected, you also need antivirus software. Well, Surfshark is one of the few VPNs to offer packages with antivirus software, which it calls the Surfshark One bundle. When we signed up for two years, we paid only $3.98 a month ($95.52 upfront) for a VPN, data breach notifications, an ad-blocker, and antivirus software.

    Term length (in months) 1 6 24
    Monthly cost — VPN only $12.95 $6.49 $2.49
    Total amount billed — VPN only $12.95 $38.94 $59.76
    Monthly cost — Surfshark One $14.44 $7.98 $3.98
    Total amount billed — Surfshark One $14.44 $47.88 $95.52

Considering that most personal antivirus software costs about $40 on average, according to our report on the personal antivirus market, that’s a steal. Of course, Surfshark One isn’t comprehensive identity theft protection, so you’ll still want to get one of the best identity protection services to fill the gaps. Still, we got a lot of bang for our buck when we tried out Surfshark One.

    Unlimited Simultaneous Connections

Unless we use a VPN on a router, it’s unlikely that we can use a VPN on all of our devices. After all, most subscriptions limit the number of devices and simultaneous connections we can have.

But not Surfshark. It let us use the VPN on as many devices as we wanted at the exact same time. This makes it an excellent choice for families or businesses with a ton of devices.

Methodology

We tested all of our VPNs on Twitter and other websites and apps for at least six months each. As we detail in our VPN guide, we also look for a few other features to make our best VPN lists.

  • No DNS or WebRTC leaks: When we’re connected to a VPN, our IP address shouldn’t be visible to anyone but us.
  • User-friendly apps: We look at desktop apps as well as mobile apps to see for ourselves how easy they are to use.
  • Streaming services access: Many people use VPNs to change their regions on streaming libraries, so we stream with the VPNs connected to judge accessibility and speed.
  • Five Eyes nonmember: Ideally, the VPN is headquartered in a country that’s not a member of the Five Eyes, Nine Eyes, or 14 Eyes, meaning the data it logs is safe from surveillance.
  • Strict logging policy: The VPN company shouldn’t keep any information about the websites we visit or our IP addresses while we’re connected to its servers.
  • 256-bit encryption: The VPN should use AES 256-bit encryption, as it’s the highest standard available today.
  • Affordable pricing: We look for prices under $15 a month, with discounts for longer contracts and, if possible, a free trial or a 30-day money-back guarantee at a minimum. That makes the VPN service risk-free!
  • Kill switch: Every VPN needs a kill switch, which acts as a backup plan in case the VPN fails.
  • Split tunneling: While split tunneling isn’t an essential VPN feature, we love being able to access public and private networks simultaneously.
  • Multi-hop encryption: Again, multi-hop encryption isn’t essential, but more encryption means more privacy, so we’re for it.
  • Dynamic IP addresses: Although static IP addresses aren’t a deal-breaker, we prefer IP addresses that change every time we connect, otherwise known as dynamic IP addresses.
