It wasn’t until we put these platforms against each other that we discovered a lot of differences. For example, Keeper has some unique mobile settings that offer extra protection. On the other hand, LastPass includes its security tools in all subscriptions instead of charging extra for them, as Keeper does. Security Comparison

Keeper and LastPass use AES-256 encryption, which we consider the industry gold standard. It’s reassuring to know that financial institutions and the government use the same encryption protocol. That’s how safe your credentials are with Keeper and LastPass (and really, most password managers).

On top of encryption, Keeper has a zero-knowledge security model with multiple layers of encryption. In simple terms, every record in your vault gets its own encryption key, then those keys are encrypted with another key, creating what security experts like us call “nested encryption.” Most password managers encrypt the vault and that’s it, so we think Keeper is great for securing confidential documents besides securing passwords.

LastPass also uses zero-knowledge architecture, meaning that no one (not even the company itself) can see your passwords stored in their servers. LastPass experienced a breach in 2022.1 Cybercriminals were able to break through LastPass’ defenses and steal data from its servers, but thanks to the zero-knowledge setup, passwords remained encrypted. No passwords were leaked, according to the company.

Keeper’s Best Features

Keeper impressed us with its BreachWatch feature that continuously scans the dark web for your compromised credentials. In our tests, it flagged three old passwords that appeared in data breaches within 24 hours of adding them to our vault. The only downside is that it costs extra. It’s $25 per year for a single user, or $50 per year for family plans (up to 5 users).

The secure file storage was also worth the extra cost. Prices range from $13 a year for 10 GB per user to $100 a year for 100 GB. We used it to store passport scans and insurance documents, as well as personal photos and videos we want to keep secure.

The KeeperChat encrypted messaging feature also caught our eye. We initially questioned its necessity, but we found ourselves using it to securely share Wi-Fi passwords and account credentials with family members.

LastPass’s Best Features

LastPass has a generous free tier. Like NordPass, it offers unlimited password storage, but you can only stay signed in on one device at a time. We also appreciated LastPass’s password sharing feature. The free tier has some restrictions. You can only share passwords with one person at a time, while the paid plan allows sharing with multiple people. It worked great during testing, especially in our office setting.

The emergency access feature also impressed us. You can designate trusted contacts who can request access to your vault in emergencies. This is ideal for anyone who has concerns over digital estate planning. If something happens to you, your designated contacts simply initiate emergency access. After a waiting period set by you, LastPass will give them the key to your vault, provided you don’t revoke emergency access during the waiting period.

Our Experience With Keeper and LastPass

We used both password managers as our primary vault for 30 days each to see how they perform in the real world. Keeper’s interface felt more polished and modern. We found it easier to organize our credentials and find specific logins quickly even among hundreds of entries. The autofill accuracy also impressed us. Keeper correctly identified login fields on 94 percent of websites we tested, including tricky sites with unusual or multi-page login forms.

On the other hand, LastPass’s browser extension responded faster than Keeper’s in our tests. It typically auto-filled credentials in under a second. However, we encountered occasional syncing delays between devices. On average, it took up to 30 seconds for new passwords to appear across platforms.

Our Mobile Experience

Mobile password management often makes or breaks the experience for us, given that we unlock our phones dozens of times daily. Keeper’s mobile app impressed us with its Face ID and fingerprint integration. It worked flawlessly on our iPhones. In fact, Keeper is one of the best iPhone password managers we’ve tested. It even worked online, allowing us to access our passwords without an internet connection.

LastPass’s mobile experience was just as capable. The autofill integration with iOS and Android password managers also worked smoothly, though we noticed our battery draining faster while LastPass was running in the background.

Key Similarities

Keeper and LastPass share many features that we believe make them solid choices for password management. Both offer secure password generation with customizable parameters, like length and character types. They also provide secure notes for storing sensitive information beyond passwords, and support all major platforms including Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.

We found both Keeper and LastPass reliable for basic password management tasks. Their browser extensions work with Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, and the family plans include individual vaults for each user. This helps maintain privacy while allowing selective sharing.

The most significant difference lies in their security track records. Keeper has a clean security history with no reported breaches. As we mentioned earlier, LastPass had a major incident in 2022. It did not compromise encrypted passwords, but it did expose customer information such as emails and billing information.

Pricing strategies also differ substantially. Keeper’s free tier is limited compared to LastPass. You can only store ten passwords and access them on one device at a time. LastPass offers a free password manager that can store unlimited passwords. You can also only access it on one device at a time, but the free plan includes basic dark web monitoring and limited password sharing features.

Performance and Reliability

We measured Keeper and LastPass’s autofill speed, sync times, and app responsiveness across multiple devices and networks. Keeper’s performance was consistent with average autofill times of 0.8 seconds and near-instant syncing across devices. There were also no noticeable service disruptions during our one-month testing period.

LastPass’s browser extensions had slightly faster response times at 0.6 seconds on average. Some of the sync delays frustrated us while testing the platform across multiple devices. We also experienced two brief outages. They each lasted less than 10 minutes, but they occurred during business hours.

Keeper and LastPass Pricing

There’s not a lot of difference between Keeper and LastPass’s premium pricing, except for the family costs. Here’s an overview of both offerings.

On paper, LastPass plans are a better deal. Secure storage and dark web monitoring are included in the price. With Keeper subscriptions, you’ll need to pay extra for these features. Keeper’s family plans are also significantly more expensive and only cater to five people, while LastPass allows six users. Overall, if you’re on a budget, we’d recommend LastPass. If you don’t mind paying for premium services to get premium benefits, however, go with Keeper.

Keeper provides 24/7 live chat support for all paid users. We jumped on because we had a few questions about using some of the features. The team was helpful, and we didn’t wait any longer than five minutes for a response. We also had a look at Keeper’s knowledge base. It includes over 300 articles with screenshots and video tutorials on a range of tasks, like importing passwords and sharing credentials.

LastPass live chat is only available for paying customers. Like Keeper, we never waited longer than five minutes for a response on live chat. All the agents were helpful, answering our questions or pointing us to the right knowledge base article. Free users only have access to the 24/7 chatbot, community, and support articles.

Who Should Choose Keeper

We recommend using Keeper if you want a secure password manager security. It’s a little expensive, especially with the add-ons, but it’s great for storing sensitive business documents, cryptocurrency credentials, and other confidential data.

Additionally, while it’s more expensive than LastPass, Keeper’s family plan allows for parental controls. Parents can help children manage their passwords without having to see what those passwords are. In our opinion, that’s the perfect balance between security and privacy.

LastPass makes sense for budget-conscious users, or even those who want a free password manager. While the free tier is limited, it has the essential features and it can store unlimited passwords. We particularly recommend it to students.
