More Info on Echo
We’ve tested out a couple of different Echo devices: the Echo Show 8, the original Echo Show, the Echo Flex and the Echo Dot with Clock. While the Echo Shows are smart displays, the Flex and the Dot are smart speakers. But both the displays and speakers come with Alexa, Amazon’s voice assistant, built in. That meant that we could ask Alexa to control our smart lights, locks, security systems, cameras and more, having her show us our video doorbell footage on our Fire TV Stick, or even asking her about current events, weather, and our daily schedules. With the Show devices, we could watch TV and video chat with friends and family directly on the device; it also came in handy for cooking, as we got step-by-step instructions both read outloud and on display (hey, we’re more visual learners anyway).
FYI: Watch our Youtube video of the best Alexa skills,1 only available on Security.org’s Youtube channel.
Here are some more information on what we did with our Echo devices:
Music: We enjoyed bumping tunes for Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Pandora and more. And when we were in a reading mood while cooking, we played audiobooks from Audible, many of which are available for free.2
TV and movies: When it came to movies and TV programs, we watched on Prime Video, of course, as well as Hulu and Vevo.
Video chatting: Since the pandemic hit, we’ve gotten back into video chatting in a big way, seeing our friends and family directly on our Echo Shows through Skype.
Web browsing: More time at home also meant more time online, browsing the web with Firefox, although Silk was another option.
Shopping: It was no huge surprise that we could shop for things on Amazon with the Echo devices, as they’re one of the company’s products. Still, it was pretty convenient to tell Alexa to buy us more toilet paper when there was both a national shortage and a lockdown. We had enough stress to last us a lifetime, but at least we knew we’d be taken care of in the bathroom arena!
Smart speakers and smart displays have become a mainstay in the smart home industry, and we’re glad that Alexa, one of the most popular voice assistants, hails from one of the largest retailers in the world. That way, when there are sale events like Black Friday, we get to enjoy massive discounts on those smart speakers and displays.
Is your shopping list ready? It better be, because deals abound on Amazon. Take full advantage of Cyber Monday and Black Friday 2022 deals to build your Alexa-powered smart home system.
