Professional Installation Costs in 2026: What to Expect
While professional installation adds upfront cost, we believe it ensures your equipment is placed correctly, programmed properly, and ready to respond when it matters. Here’s a look at what you can expect to pay for this service in 2026.
| Installation Type | Sensors | Estimated Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | 3–5 sensors | $100–$200 |
| Standard | 6–10 sensors + 1-2 cameras | $200–$400 |
| Premium | 11+ sensors + cameras | $400–$800 (usually custom quote) |
Costs vary by company, home size, and complexity. ADT prices start at $99, while Vivint starts at $199. We have seen Vivint waive that fee as part of a promotion, though. SimpliSafe’s professional installation starts at $124.99 through its third-party installer, OnTech.
If cost is a concern, we suggest waiting for a deal. Vivint and ADT both run free installation promotions around Black Friday, and it never hurts to ask a sales rep directly. Installation discounts are often available even outside of major sale events.

What’s Included With Professional Installation?
Professional installers do more than mount equipment. Here’s what you should expect from top providers:
- Security assessment, choosing the best spots to install equipment.
- Equipment installation and testing of every device.
- Full system programming, including zones, schedules, and automations.
- System training, lasting about 30 to 60 minutes, covering the app and alarm responses.
If a technician wraps up without walking you through the system, ask them to. It’s part of the service you’re paying for.

1. Vivint - Best Smart Home System
Product Specs
Equipment costs Starting at $199 Monitoring options Professional Monthly monitoring costs Starting from $24.99 Contract lengths Starting at 42 months Installation options Professional Smart platform integration Alexa and Google Home Vivint Overview
The Vivint technician wall-mounted our Vivint Smart Hub near the front door for easy access. Vivint is another premium home security company that leans into smart home functionality. We particularly like how they use automation to improve the capabilities of their security system with active deterrence features. It adds a layer of complexity, though, so we understand why professional installation is required with every Vivint home security plan.
FYI: Vivint security systems must be installed by their technicians. That includes the door sensors, which just stick to a frame. If you prefer a more hands-on approach, check out our favorite DIY security systems.
What We Like
- Professional installation is often free
- Wide range of smart devices

What We Don’t Like

Vivint Installation Cost
Full disclosure, we were lucky enough to grab a free installation deal when we tested Vivint. We didn’t pay anything for the service. Our invoice, however, says that we saved $200, which is roughly on par with ADT’s installation costs. The technician also had our system up and running in about the same time it took for our ADT installation.
That said, Vivint has higher moving costs than most security systems. Reinstalling Vivint equipment in a new home runs around $150. That makes it a tough sell for renters or anyone who moves frequently. Try these top security systems for apartments instead. Or consider a no-monthly-fee security system.
FYI: Active-duty military members can avoid Vivint’s moving fee if it’s for a qualified reason such as a deployment or a medical discharge. You’ll also get a 50 percent discount on equipment you buy for the new residence.
Vivint Equipment
We used our Vivint Outdoor Camera Pro Gen 2’s Smart Deter feature to arm our spotlight and siren. You won’t find Vivint on our list of affordable home security systems. Our package cost us $1,400, significantly more than the Cove package we bought. Like ADT, you can finance the system so you don’t drain your bank account. We also think of it as future-proofing our home, considering how advanced the equipment is. Here are some of our highlights.
- Outdoor camera: This was one of the best outdoor cameras we’ve tested. While its 4K image sensor and 140-degree field of view was nice, its AI-powered threat deterrence feature stood out most. When it identifies a threat, it automatically sounds its alarm to scare them off.
Our Vivint outdoor camera shot super crisp nighttime video - Smart Deter: To actively protect our home, Vivint’s cameras use AI to detect potential threats. Once it detects a threat, its smart deter feature kicks in, which sounds a warning tone and flashes its light to scare off the perpetrator.
- Kwikset smart lock: Another smart home device we liked, our smart lock let us open the door for guests and family and then lock it again remotely.

Pro Tip: We recommend Vivint’s recessed door sensors; the normal ones are pretty clunky (see below.) The recessed sensors are a little trickier to install, but with a professional installation, you won’t have to do any drilling.
Vivint’s door sensor had a modern look that didn’t quite fit the aesthetic of our wooden door. Potential Downsides
While Vivint delivers premium equipment and service, the company has faced legal scrutiny over how it conducts business. In December 2024, the FTC reached a settlement with Vivint over allegations the company pulled credit reports on consumers without proper authorization and incorrectly reported delinquent accounts to credit bureaus.1
As for the security system itself, the main sticking point is cost. Vivint’s equipment is genuinely top-tier, but you’ll pay a premium for it. The outdoor camera we tested ran us $399, which is more than double what you’d pay for something like the Nest Cam (battery).
FYI: In 2023, North Carolina-based CPI Security Systems sued Vivint for deceptive sales practices, settling for a massive $189.7 million. Vivint salesman, it was alleged, had posed as CPI reps and convinced elderly customers to purchase Vivint plans.2

2. ADT - Best Installation and Monitoring Service
Product Specs
Equipment Costs Starting at $404 Monitoring Options Professional Monthly Monitoring Costs Starting at $24.99 Contract Lengths 36 months and up Installation Options Professional Smart Platform Integration Alexa and Google Home ADT Overview
ADT partners with Google for their video doorbells and security cameras, and has opened the door to home automation, making it a top security system for smart homes. It even has a line of equipment you can install yourself, called ADT Blu. Still, we believe ADT works best as a professionally installed and monitored security system thanks to its top-notch quality of service.

This time around we had an ADT technician install our 11-piece ADT home security system. What We Like
- Experienced in-house technicians
- Google Nest camera equipment
- Offers smart lights, plugs, thermostats, and more
What We Don’t Like
- Pricey installation
- Long contracts
- ADT-branded equipment lacks some features
ADT Installation Cost
Typically, ADT installation fees range from $99 to $199. Every year we test ADT, we pay somewhere in that range. However, costs can climb higher for larger homes or complex setups.
Professional installation through ADT isn’t cheap, but it’s worth it. Their local technicians are trained specifically on ADT equipment, so they get the job done efficiently and correctly the first time. Our most recent ADT installation wrapped up in under two hours, which is pretty quick for an 11-piece system. If cost is a concern, you can take advantage of ADT’s deals to offset those upfront installation costs.
Pro Tip: ADT Pro Install systems require lengthy contracts if you buy it through financing, which isn’t ideal. However, ADT offers a six-month money-back guarantee in case you’re not happy. For more common concerns about ADT products and services, visit our ADT FAQs.
ADT Equipment
We had our ADT technician install our Google Nest Cam over our driveway. ADT cameras come from the Google Nest lineup and integrate seamlessly with the rest of the security equipment. Nest cameras rank among the best on the market, packing state-of-the-art features like AI-powered facial recognition. Here’s a breakdown of the devices available.
- Video doorbell: The Google Nest Doorbell we reviewed shot 1080p HDR video and had crisp night vision. The wired Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) steps things up further with up to (2K) resolution. Both models also feature HDR processing to deliver clearer footage in tricky lighting conditions.s also feature HDR processing to deliver clearer footage in tricky lighting conditions.
- Facial recognition: The ADT Complete plan ($49.99 per month) includes a Google Home Premium subscription, which unlocks Google’s AI-powered familiar-face detection, which is a useful feature for knowing exactly who’s at your door.
- Nest Cams: ADT indoor and outdoor cameras (from Google Nest) are on par with premium security cameras we’ve tested from Vivint and other top brands.
- Smart home integrations: ADT sells most of Google Nest’s products, including the Nest Thermostat and Nest Hub. For the ones they don’t offer, you can always buy them from Google and integrate them into your ADT Pro Install system.
While the camera selection is more limited than some competitors (four main models and two doorbells), we found each device delivers exceptional coverage. The Nest Cam’s 130-degree field of view and intelligent alerts meant we needed fewer cameras overall to secure our property.
>> Check Out: Best Home Security Systems That Work With Google Assistant
FYI: You can control your ADT smart devices via Google Assistant or via the ADT+ app. We used the app to create a security automation that notified us whenever we left a window open after 6 p.m. for more than 15 minutes.
Our ADT technician installed our door sensor on the top corner of our window frame. Potential Downsides
ADT contracts might seem like a turn-off, but they can reduce your upfront costs. Instead of dropping a ton of cash for a system, you can finance the equipment and pay it off over three years. In our case, financing brought our monthly equipment cost down to about $25 instead of paying $900 upfront.
We also didn’t mind signing the contract with ADT. In the years we’ve been testing ADT, we’ve always found its contracts forthcoming, transparent, and easy to understand, especially compared to Vivint.

3. SimpliSafe - Best Contract-Free Option
Product Specs
Equipment Costs Packages starting at $250.96 Monitoring Options Professional and DIY Monthly Monitoring Costs Starts at $22.99 Contract Lengths Month-to-month Installation Options DIY or professional Smart Platform Integration Alexa and Google Home SimpliSafe Overview
We bought SimpliSafe’s full device lineup to test out all of their components. Unlike Vivint, SimpliSafe doesn’t require professional installation. In our testing, a full self-install took under an hour, though professional installation is now available too at a reasonable cost if you’d rather skip the DIY route. And unlike Vivint, expanding your system afterward doesn’t come with added fees.
The real standout feature is Active Guard Outdoor Protection. It lets monitoring agents intervene directly through outdoor cameras, warning off potential intruders before they ever reach the door. If someone does get past that first layer, Intruder Intervention extends the same kind of real-time response to the indoor camera.
What We Like
- No contract
- Good value equipment
- Some high-tech features
What We Don’t Like
- Limited selection of devices
- Professional installation starts at $125
- Third-party installation technicians
SimpliSafe Installation Cost
Our SimpliSafe keypad came with our security system. SimpliSafe installations start at $124.99 for 10 pieces of equipment. We bought the 14-piece SimpliSafe bundle and paid over $150 for our installation. It was worth it, given that the technician took half a day to set everything up.
FYI: Unlike Vivint and ADT, which have in-house, trained technicians, SimpliSafe outsources installation jobs to OnTech. This is the same company Ring uses, except it costs more for Ring equipment.
SimpliSafe Equipment
SimpliSafe offers a full range of equipment, including video doorbells, outdoor cameras, and smart locks, at a price point well below ADT or Vivint. The outdoor camera alone runs about half what Vivint charges, without sacrificing on quality. See our Vivint and SimpliSafe comparison for a closer look.
The outdoor camera shoots 1080p HDR video with strong night vision and person detection in our testing, with 24/7 recording unlocked on the Pro Plus monitoring plan. Pairing it with Active Guard Outdoor Protection, available on Pro or Pro Plus, adds proactive deterrence. When the camera flags a potential threat, SimpliSafe agents get real-time camera access to intervene and scare off the intruder before they get further.
On installation, the equipment is built for DIY setup, and we’d recommend going that route if you’re comfortable with it. In our experience, it took about an hour and saved a significant amount compared to professional installation.
FYI: SimpliSafe now sells a smart lock. While it isn’t one of our top five smart locks, it’s one of the more affordable locks we’ve tested at $119.99. That makes it a solid pick if you want smart lock functionality without a steep price tag.
Our SimpliSafe outdoor camera could read the license plates of cars that drove up to our house. Potential Downsides
In 2019, security researchers uncovered vulnerabilities that could allow someone to disarm the system using specialized equipment, but SimpliSafe addressed those issues quickly with a firmware update. We’ve been putting their systems through their paces ever since and haven’t run into any major security concerns.

4. Alder Security - Best Response Time
Product Specs
Equipment Costs Starting at $0 Monitoring Options Professional only Monthly Monitoring Costs Starting at $35 Contract Lengths 36 months Installation Options Professional or DIY Smart Platform Integration Alexa and Google Home Alder Security Overview
Our Alder security system included sensors, cameras, and a touchscreen hub. Alder doesn’t carry the name recognition of ADT, Vivint, or SimpliSafe, but it held up well in our testing, earning a 9.0 out of 10 SecurityScore in our Alder security system review. For context, our Ring Alarm review came in at 7.7 out of 10. That said, like Vivint, Alder has faced accusations of deceptive business practices, and installation costs aren’t always straightforward upfront.
The “free” starter system, a touchscreen panel, two entry sensors, and a motion detector, comes with a catch. It requires a three-year monitoring contract at $40 per month, which adds up to $1,440 over the contract term. Competitive for professional monitoring, sure. Genuinely free, not quite.
What We Like
- Professional technicians
- Highly rated app
- Limited up-front costs
What We Don’t Like
- Hefty activation fee
- Long contracts
- Sketchy sales tactics
Alder Security Installation Cost
Like Vivint, Alder keeps pricing off its website entirely, and we couldn’t get a quote over the phone either. Instead, a rep visited our property, performed an inspection, and walked through package options in person. That personalized approach helped ensure the system actually fit our home, though it meant fielding a few upsells along the way, and it makes comparison shopping considerably harder.
On installation cost, expect to land in the typical $100 to $200 range, and likely not much above it. When we asked Alder for either a free installation or a free piece of equipment, they gave us the free installation.
Alder Security Equipment
Cellular backup came standard with the hub, which kept our system connected during Wi-Fi outages, and the cost is folded into the required monthly fee. ADT, Vivint, and SimpliSafe all offer the same, and all three made our list of the best cellular security systems. Alder didn’t make that list, largely due to the pricing transparency issues noted earlier.
Where Alder genuinely excels is response time. Our testing clocked an average under 25 seconds, well ahead of the 45 to 60 second industry standard. The tradeoff shows up in smart home integration, where Alder falls short of Vivint. There’s no real smart home product lineup to speak of, which could be a dealbreaker if building out a connected home is part of the plan.
Alder’s Touchscreen Control Panel let us arm our system and set a timer for how long we want it armed. Potential Downsides
We mentioned the past accusations of deceptive sales practices, but that wasn’t our experience. The home visit was professional and installation went smoothly, though that doesn’t guarantee the same experience for every customer.
The bigger concern is value over time. Multiply Alder’s monitoring rate across the full three years and you’re looking at over $1,400 total, before factoring in equipment costs or activation fees. Professional monitoring is included in that price, but it’s still a steeper long-term commitment than most DIY alternatives require.
Methodology: How We Picked The Top Security Systems with Professional Installation
Our Review Guidelines
Not all security systems are created equal, and our job is to find the ones that actually hold up. To do that, our experts install and operate each system we review over a minimum of four weeks. That includes clocking the full installation time, running break-in simulations to measure the speed at which monitoring centers respond, and evaluating mobile app reliability, voice assistant, and smart home support. Our team also simulates connectivity and power failures, including accidental triggers, so we know how each system behaves when it matters most. Then we weigh upfront pricing, recurring subscription fees, and other terms and conditions, all in line with our Editorial Guidelines, to make sure the best security systems we highlight work well in the real world.
Our Main Testing Criteria
Professionally installed security systems are not for everyone or every household. To create our list, we considered three key criteria before recommending a professional installation.
- Installation costs: Our top picks have reasonable installation costs. Some even include it for free as part of the package or during sales.
- Equipment quality: Every security system on this list has reliable equipment that holds up to our extensive testing. Some include devices you could install yourself, but when set up by a technician, you have peace of mind that they’re properly placed and optimized.
- Contract terms: A lot of professionally installed security systems require contracts. If a contract is required, we reviewed every clause to make sure you won’t be locked into unfavorable terms.
Every system listed here was installed in one of our security experts’ homes. They went through the professional installation process so they could report their real experiences. They then spent at least two weeks with the system to run through our methodical tests that result in a final score.

How to Choose a Professionally Installed Security System
Deciding between professional and DIY installation is just the beginning. You also need to figure out which professionally installed security system will work best for you. Here are the questions we ask to evaluate professionally installed security systems:
- Does the equipment match my needs? Consider whether you need basic monitoring or advanced features like facial recognition and smart deterrence. There’s no point paying premium prices for features you won’t use.
- Do I trust the company? Security equipment often requires a contract or at least financing. Only enter into an agreement with a company you can see yourself working with over time.
- Is my security system future-proof? You may not have a smart home today, but in a year or two you may want one. If your security system isn’t smart home compatible, you’ll have to start from scratch.

Do You Need Professional Installation?
Professional installation isn’t always necessary, even if it’s not always optional. Here’s how to figure out if it makes sense for your situation.
Choose Professional Installation If:
- You have a system that requires hardwiring
- You’re installing more than 10 sensors across multiple floors
- Your local jurisdiction requires permits for security system installation
- You’re not comfortable with basic tools or wall mounting
- You have physical limitations that make installation challenging
DIY Is Fine If:
- You’re installing a wireless system like SimpliSafe, Ring, or Cove
- You have fewer than 10 devices to install
- You’re in a single-story or smaller home
- You’re tech-savvy and comfortable following setup guides
- You want to save up to $400 on installation costs
For most wireless systems, DIY is fine. The systems we recommend, like SimpliSafe, were designed with self-installation in mind, so you can be up and running in under an hour.
Professional installation makes the most sense for hardwired equipment, large multi-floor homes, or situations where local permits are required. If you’re on the fence, just call your provider. Most will walk you through which option fits your setup before you sign anything.

The Pros and Cons of Professionally Installed Security Systems
Professional installations are quality controls that ensure your security equipment is properly set up and ready for emergencies. But there are a few considerations.
What We Don’t Like
- Professional installations cost more. You could use that money for another piece of equipment you need.
- Installations are day or half-day events and you have to be there overseeing.
- You may end up with a subpar technician, even if they’re specialists.
What We Like
- A pro installation doesn’t cost too much in our experience.
- If you install your system yourself and make a mistake, you’ll have to pay to fix it anyway.
- Technicians are usually good, especially those trained by ADT and Vivint. If they make a mistake, they should fix it at no extra cost.
With professionally installed systems, you also get:
- Maintenance. If your equipment isn’t working, your security company should send someone out to fix or replace it, depending on your contract.
- Professional monitoring. Companies that offer good installation services also tend to offer solid monitoring, which we typically recommend. It speeds up law enforcement responses and ensures your home’s protected 24/7.
- Financing. Security companies selling premium features like professional installations often offer financing to put their equipment and services within reach.
After testing more than 60 security systems, we consistently find professional installation worth the investment for most homeowners.
Are Professionally Installed Security Systems Safe?
Inviting a person, even a trained professional, into your home to set up your security system may set you on edge. They know where your alarm is and how to disable it. What if their side hustle is burglary?
Your concerns are understandable, but the risks are minimal. Major security companies require comprehensive background checks, drug testing, and continuous monitoring of their technicians. Many also require an Electronic Security Association certification which requires roughly 70 hours of training.3

What to Expect During Your Home Security System Installation
If you do move forward with a professional installation, here’s what to expect.
- Assessment: A professional will take a good look at your home and your security package to make sure there’s a spot for every device. Depending on the company, this may happen before you even sign the contract.
- Installation: Installation times vary significantly. Our ADT setup took just two hours for 11 devices. For Vivint, the installation turned into a full day affair. How long your installation takes will depend on the size and age of your home, how much equipment you’ve ordered, and how much wiring and automation is involved.
- Configuration: Your new security system will have a software and hardware component. Your technician will make sure all your devices are not only installed correctly, but also configured correctly. That typically means connecting them to your home Wi-Fi network and controller. With Vivint and ADT, our technicians also connected our third-party smart home devices.
- Education: A good technician won’t leave until you feel confident using your system. During our installations, technicians spent 20 to 30 minutes walking us through the app, demonstrating alarm responses, and answering our questions about automation features.
All in all, professional installation won’t necessarily save you time compared to installing the system yourself. However, it ensures you get the most value out of every security component you buy. A professional will ensure optimal placement of each piece of equipment in your system to optimize its effectiveness.
FYI: When it’s time for the security technician to install your system, you should get a text or call that they’re on their way. If you have any doubts about their authenticity, call your security company to double-check.
Recap
After extensive hands-on testing, Vivint is our top choice for professionally installed systems. They’ve strengthened their position with advanced home automation and top-of-the-line equipment, backed with reliable professional monitoring. That said, ADT continues to excel thanks to its Google Nest integration and always-innovative approach. SimpliSafe offers the best no-contract flexibility, and Alder delivers impressively fast response times under 25 seconds.
