Roblox has helped users unlock their creativity and collaborate with one another in exciting environments for years. Since its release in 2006, it has since exploded in popularity, with 164 million active users.
If you’re one of those, you might be wondering if a VPN can improve your in-game experience and keep Roblox safe. Maybe you’re in a country with restrictive internet that makes it hard for you to play. Maybe you’re in a dorm room that blacklists certain sites. Or maybe you just don’t want the IT guy to know what you’re doing on your work computer. Seriously, though, don’t get fired.
Regardless of your reason for wanting to access Roblox through a VPN, I’ve done the legwork of testing the best VPNs to bring you this list. If you need a VPN to protect your privacy while playing or if you’re looking to access new servers around the world, don’t worry — I’ve got you covered.
Before we get into the list, though, let’s take a look at some of the criteria I used to rank the best Roblox VPNs of 2023.
What to Look for in a Roblox VPN
There’s no two ways around it — using a VPN is going to impact your computer’s performance. The best VPNs, however, are going to have advanced servers that can make it so your slowdowns are imperceivable. You don’t want to lag out while you’re exploring new Roblox worlds, and the fastest VPNs will prevent that.
Truth be told, most of the top-shelf VPNs on the market today are all different flavors of the same dish, which means they have to look for peripheral features to differentiate themselves from their competitors. Think about what else you might want to use your VPN for, like accessing Netflix while you’re on vacation.
No matter what you’re shopping for, price is going to be a factor. The good news is even the top VPNs on the market are pretty affordable, especially when you pay up-front for a long-term subscription. Also, keep in mind, there are a handful of VPNs with free trials.
When it comes to playing Roblox, or gaming in general, my first choice is usually NordVPN. It strikes a great balance between security and speed, so I know that whoever I’m interacting with online won’t have access to my personal information, and I won’t be at a disadvantage because of any connectivity slowdowns. I like hanging out in Roblox Brookhaven, and since there are tons of users to interact with, I connect to it through NordVPN every time.
What We Like
5,000+ servers in 60 countries
OpenVPN and NordLynx protocols
Best-in-class encryption and security
What We Don’t Like
iOS and macOS apps do not have split tunneling
Higher latency when connecting to servers farther away
A bit pricier
Higher renewal prices
Why Use NordVPN for Roblox?
Like I said above, whenever you’re connecting to a large interactive game, you’ll want to take some measures to protect yourself. You never know who you’re interacting with on Roblox, especially in big, collaborative worlds. NordVPN will head anyone off at the pass who’s looking to collect your personal information — like your IP address — for nefarious reasons.
The sad truth is that not everyone on Roblox is there to have a good time. As far back as 2017, there have been reports of cybercriminals stealing from other users. In 2021, Roblox paid out approximately $500 million to users in a class action lawsuit. If you don’t want to fall victim to cybercrime while playing, then take steps to cover your digital tracks, which Nord does exceptionally well.
NordVPN has robust 256-bit data encryption, will not leak your IP address or DNS requests, and the kill switch will terminate all internet-connected programs on your computer if the VPN cuts out. I’ve had that happen a handful of times in my years of using Nord. It’s a little jarring in the moment, but it’s good to know that they’ve designed a product that’s so privacy-focused. It’s my go-to VPN for both gaming and for day-to-day use for that reason alone.
NordVPN also sets itself apart from the crowd by being one of the best VPNs for streaming. In recent years, platforms like Hulu and Disney+ have really cracked down on VPN use, but NordVPN’s obfuscated servers make it so these platforms can’t even tell you’re using a VPN to begin with. Just last week I used NordVPN to connect to a Japanese server to show a few of my friends a few game shows from that part of the world. If you haven’t tried that, you really should.
So whenever I talk about VPN speeds, I always give a bit of a disclaimer. Your particular connection is going to depend on a huge number of factors, so when I say, “NordVPN slowed me down by 8%,” that doesn’t mean it’s going to be your exact experience. That said, NordVPN is consistently one of the fastest VPNs I use, whether that’s for work, online shopping, or playing Roblox. If you want to have a look at the fine details, though, below are the results of my last speed test. Again — your mileage may vary.
So Nord is one of those VPNs that offers a couple of different tiers of service as well as a few different subscription terms; I have more on that in my guide to NordVPN’s prices. As far as affordability goes, it’s right in the middle. ExpressVPN is one of the more expensive options out there — but word to the wise, it’s worth every penny — and FastestVPN is one of the most affordable VPNs I’ve tested. That said, they’re all pretty much within swinging distance of one another. As far as NordVPN goes, though, here’s how everything shakes out:
$4.99 per month
$3.79 per month
$5.79 per month
$4.59 per month
$6.99 per month
$5.79 per month
2. Surfshark - Best VPN for Roblox Developers and Creators
Surfshark is another VPN favorite of mine. It’s lightweight, it’s speedy, and it offers a huge number of connections for an affordable price. Because of that, I’ve billed them as the best VPN for Roblox creators and developers. You’ll want to test your creation on a lot of devices, after all, to make sure they’re working just as well on an iPhone as they do on a desktop running Linux. Oh, and pssst… if you’re one of those folks, I’ve got a list of the best VPNs for Linux, too.
30-day money-back guarantee, plus seven-day trial on mobile phones
Optional malware protection
What We Don’t Like
No split tunneling on iOS
Latency on Windows can get pretty high
Expensive if you pay month-to-month
Limited customer support, with only live chat and email support available
Why Use SurfShark for Roblox?
A lot of VPNs limit the number of connections you can have per subscription — Cyberghost comes to mind — but not so with Surfshark. Their sophisticated server network does not limit bandwidth whatsoever, so the number of devices on one connection won’t impact your speeds.
What does this mean for you, the Roblox creator? It means that it’s going to help you test out your world from a number of angles. Surfshark works really well on iOS and Android smartphones; Windows, Mac, and Linux computers; and even Xboxes and PlayStations. That far-reaching compatibility with major platforms enables developers to test how their worlds perform across different devices while enjoying the protection that comes with VPN connectivity.
If you enjoy traveling as much as I do, I think you’re going to find some of Surfshark’s features pretty compelling. Their “no borders” mode helps you access the free and open internet from countries where the web is heavily censored. I actually used it when I was teaching English abroad in China years ago and had great results. Their large server network — 3,200 and counting — means that you’re always going to be in close proximity to a server location. And you know what that means? Better performance, no matter where you’re roaming.
I’ll save you the speech that I gave you above about how speed is dependent on a crazy amount of factors — including the time of day — and we’ll just get right into it. Surfshark is a very fast VPN. Fast enough that I’ve rarely noticed slowdowns significant enough to open up the app to figure out what the heck is going on. The only times that’s happened, there was something else going on. Thanks a lot, Optimum.
For those interested, though, here’s the data on my latest speed test with Surfshark:
Surfshark Speed Test Data
Devices tested on
MacBook Pro 2011
Acer Aspire 5 (Windows 10)
Ping without VPN (in ms)
Ping with VPN (in ms)
Macbook download speed without VPN (in mbps)
Download speed with VPN (in mbps)
Download speed difference
Upload speed without VPN (in mbps)

Another selling point is that Surfshark is a little cheaper than my first pick, NordVPN, when you sign up for a longer subscription term. Surfshark One — the one I use — will save you about $24 bucks a month over the comparable NordVPN subscription. I have more on that in my guide to Surfshark’s costs, but here’s the quick and dirty breakdown:
$3.99 per month
$2.49 per month
$4.09 per month
$3.19 per month
$6.49 per month
$4.97 per month
3. Private Internet Access VPN - Best Speeds for Playing Roblox
While NordVPN and Surfshark are both plenty fast to experience uninterrupted Roblox gameplay, Private Internet Access takes things to another level. Not that it has some outrageous capacity for higher speeds or anything — we’re not comparing Hyundais to Lamborghinis here — it’s that PIA lets its users pop the hood and really do some fine-tuning to get the service to function exactly how they want it.
What We Like
Affordable monthly and annual subscriptions
Greater-than-average speeds and low latency
Wide server selection
Reliable and efficient apps
What We Don’t Like
Split tunneling on Windows, Mac, and Android only
No real VPN obfuscation
Mixed customer support experience
Based in the United States (for data-sharing reasons)
Why Use PIA for Roblox?
So when you’re using a VPN to game online — Roblox included — two things really matter. Your speeds (down and up) as well as your latency. The good thing about PIA is that it allows users to really hone the service to dial things in exactly how they want them. Remember, these fractions of a second could mean the difference between winning and losing, so if you’re a serious player, you’re going to want to pay attention to the details.
PIA has killer apps for both iPhone and Android, so if you’re like me and take your games with you while you’re on the go — like on the long subway ride from Myrtle Wycoff to 14th street — you’ll be able to while protecting yourself from anyone else who’s connected to that public Wi-Fi. A good mobile VPN is a must in my book, and PIA has some of the best.
You can really tune up your PIA experience based on the performance you’re seeing. For example, I’ve used PIA and noticed things slowing down a bit, so I cycled through the protocols offered and switched up my server locations. Generally speaking, IpSec/L2TP and Wireguard are the fastest for me, but I always check the server load of the connection point, too. If you’re looking for numbers, on my last test, my Mac slowed down by about 65% on the download, and my Windows machine took a 15% hit. On upload, it was 30% and 5%, respectively. Barely any latency was picked up on either machine.
I go into more detail in my guide to Private Internet Access costs, but the general storyline is this: PIA is a little expensive when you’re paying month-to-month, but it gets really affordable when you pay upfront for a three-year subscription term. At the year mark, you’ll have saved $12 over Surfshark and $36 over NordVPN. Not huge amounts of money, but hey, every little bit counts. Use those savings to pick up a couple extra Robux. Here’s the breakdown:
PIA Pricing Breakdown
PIA Subscription Term:
$11.95 per month
$3.33 per month
$1.98 per month
Can You Get in Trouble for Using a VPN to Access Roblox?
The Roblox Terms of Service frowns on using a VPN to access the game, but they’re pretty clear on what you can and can’t do while using it. If you’re using the VPN to gain early access to specific features or harass other players, your account might get flagged or even shut down. If you’re just using it to access the game or to protect yourself while you’re playing, you should be fine.
We’ve tested dozens of VPNs over the years, but much like Roblox, these VPNs are ever-improving. Before writing this review, we retested the best VPNs, keeping in mind the features that Roblox players and developers will most likely need. Here’s what went into our decision-making process.
The number of servers available and their locations are vital. You want a VPN with servers that are close to you geographically to keep the latency low, but having servers spread around the world is also advantageous. Additionally, you want a VPN with enough servers so that users can spread out more evenly, preventing network congestion.
We also kept in mind that there are Roblox players in countries that are more restrictive in terms of what online content their citizens can access (ahem, China). For such cases, we looked for VPNs that use obfuscation techniques to bypass censorship. These VPNs generally do a much better job at unblocking Roblox and other types of content in places where they’re blocked.
The majority of Roblox users are minors, so we made sure to include only VPNs with prices that are affordable to that age group or that are less objectionable to parents. Plus, the VPNs we selected support multiple devices so that parents and other family members can share the subscription.
Security and Privacy
We’ve noticed that security and privacy are major motivating factors for Roblox users to use VPNs. After all, the Roblox online community isn’t free from bad actors who are taking every possible opportunity to get ahead of others. We selected the best VPNs with the strongest privacy and security features, such as encryption, malware blocking, and a kill switch. And again, these features apply not only to Roblox, but to the digital world in general, so they can be helpful even outside of the game.
VPNs likely won’t improve your ping time and connection speed on Roblox. In fact, in the tests we performed, using a VPN increased our ping and reduced our internet speed by up to 40%. However, there are cases where using a VPN actually improves the connection speed, such as when your ISP is throttling down your internet. With a VPN, the IP address that your ISP sees is changed, potentially bypassing throttles.
Any VPN server works with Roblox, but for the best speeds, we recommend using a server closest to you geographically. The closer you are to the server, the less distance your network traffic needs to travel, resulting in better speeds.
Roblox doesn’t outright ban the use of VPNs, but a recent update of its terms of service mentions that “using VPNs to mask your location in order to gain unauthorized access to the ‘Roblox’ platform, a specific feature, or another user’s account” is a violation. But if you use VPNs only to play or create experiences like you normally would without a VPN, there shouldn’t be any problems.
Generally, we don’t recommend using free VPNs for Roblox, as they are either unsecure or limited in terms of features. If you want a free VPN, some brands like Surfshark offer a seven-day free trial on mobile devices.
Using a VPN can do a lot of things, but it won’t really help you gain any advantage in Roblox. VPNs are mostly used by Roblox players to prevent other users from gathering their personally identifying information or to play the game from places where it might be restricted.
