We know what some of you are thinking: “Why would you need a VPN to play ‘Roblox’? It’s all just fun and games, right?”
Well, first, virtual private networks (VPNs) let “Roblox” players play in places where the game is inaccessible, such as in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. Second, where there’s money involved, expect there to be cybercriminals as well. Since “Roblox” lets users exchange real money for Robux, the game’s virtual currency, you need a way to protect yourself from potential cyberattacks. That’s where VPNs come in.
Whether by simply changing your IP location so you can access “Roblox” or upping your online privacy to protect you from cybercrime, a VPN can be useful for “Roblox” players and developers alike.
In this review, we’ll go over the best “Roblox” VPNs that we personally tested. There are three of them, and each has at least one strong feature that we think will serve “Roblox” players well, so keep on reading to find out which one is best for you.
What We Look for in Roblox VPNs
Low latency, high upload/download speed
Obfuscation, kill switch, split tunneling
The Best Roblox VPNs: Why They're The Best
NordVPN - Best VPN for Accessing “Roblox” in Restrictive Countries and Places
Surfshark - Best VPN for “Roblox” Developers and Creators
Higher latency when connecting to servers farther away
A bit pricier
Higher renewal prices
Access ‘Roblox’ Anywhere
Like we said in the intro, “Roblox” is inaccessible in some places. Even if you live in the U.S., there are networks that block “Roblox” — your college dorm Wi-Fi, your campus Wi-Fi, or maybe even your office Wi-Fi if you’re already a working adult.
There’s nothing wrong with playing a few minutes of “Murder Mystery 2” during your break, but unfortunately, network firewalls don’t take breaks. For that, you’ll need a VPN to encrypt your traffic, and what better VPN to use than NordVPN? It utilizes 256-bit AES encryption, which is practically unbeatable, to hide the fact that you’re playing “Roblox” from your network firewall. You can connect to any of its 5,400 servers in 60 countries, and to your network, it will simply appear as though you’re sending and receiving data packets from Nord’s servers, not those of “Roblox.”
FYI: A VPN protects your privacy by hiding your real IP address and replacing it with a VPN server’s IP address. As a side effect, the websites you visit will assume that your location is the same as that of the VPN server. This allows you to bypass geographical restrictions when it comes to online content.
But what if your network (or your government) blocks VPN connections as well? Not to worry, because NordVPN has a savvy solution: VPN obfuscation.1
As the name suggests, this feature obfuscates your VPN connection. When you connect to a normal VPN server, your network, internet provider, and the government can’t see what you do online, but they can still figure out that you’re using a VPN based on how your traffic looks. When you connect to an “obfuscated server,” as NordVPN calls them, it tries to make your traffic seem normal. By doing so, it bypasses technologies aimed to block VPN connections. VPN obfuscation is a great tool for accessing “Roblox” in highly restrictive countries and networks.
An Accessible VPN
The great thing about NordVPN is that not only does it use highly advanced tech, but it makes that technology accessible to the masses. It is a consumer VPN, after all. You’ll only need to pay NordVPN $3.99 per month (the cheapest plan) to use NordVPN and gain access to its powerful encryption, speedy VPN protocols (NordLynx and OpenVPN), obfuscation technology, and thousands of VPN servers worldwide. That monthly price comes with the two-year subscription, which in total costs $95.76. You can also opt for the $11.99 monthly plan or the $59.88 one-year plan ($4.99 per month).
2. Surfshark - Best VPN for “Roblox” Developers and Creators
30-day money-back guarantee, plus seven-day trial on mobile phones
Optional malware protection
What We Don’t Like
No split tunneling on iOS
Latency on Windows can get pretty high
Expensive if you pay month-to-month
Limited customer support, with only live chat and email support available
Test Your ‘Roblox’ Experiences on Multiple Devices
Beyond being just a game, “Roblox” is a community of players, developers, and creators making up its over 43 million daily active users.2 While the main purpose of “Roblox” is to provide players with engaging and creative virtual experiences, developers play a big role, as they are the ones who create those experiences. However, in order to create a successful experience (or mini-game) within the “Roblox” ecosystem, you need to be able to test your creations. That’s where Surfshark enters the scene.
Surfshark provides VPN connections to all major operating systems and platforms. It works on iOS and Android smartphones; Windows, Mac, and Linux computers; and even Xboxes and PlayStations. That far-reaching compatibility with major platforms enables developers to test how their mini-games perform across different devices that support “Roblox” while enjoying the protection that comes with VPN connectivity.
Surfshark Security Features
But why do “Roblox” users — developers in particular — need VPN protection? Well, as far back as 2017, there have been reports of cybercriminals stealing from “Roblox” developers.3 In 2021, “Roblox” paid out approximately $500 million to its 1.3 million developers, so there’s certainly a lot of money in there.4
By simply connecting to a VPN, you’re protecting your privacy, which goes a long way in preventing cybercrime from being committed against you. In addition, Surfshark has extra features that could help further. For instance, it blocks malware from websites that you visit that could be used to steal your login credentials. It also hides your real IP address, which makes it hard for others to spy on you particularly while using the game’s chat feature. And if you’re willing to pay an extra $1.49 a month, you can install Surfshark One, which includes antivirus software, on your devices.
Pro Tip: Surfshark also offers VPN obfuscation, under the name Camouflage Mode.
Subscriptions That Don’t Break the Bank
All of these protections from Surfshark come at a price, but the good news is that the price isn’t too high. Sure, it will cost you $12.95 per month to use Surfshark VPN if you pay monthly, but there are generous discounts if you pay for one or two years in advance. A one-year Surfshark subscription costs $47.88 ($3.99 per month), while a two-year subscription costs $59.76 ($2.49 per month). On top of the discounts, you’ll get a 30-day money-back guarantee, during which time you can cancel your subscription and request a refund if you change your mind.
3. Private Internet Access VPN - Best Latency and Speed for Playing “Roblox”
We found Private Internet Access to be an easy-to-use VPN with great features and consistent speeds. It’s affordable, too, which we know many gamers will appreciate with the already high cost of AAA game titles. If you do choose Private Internet Access, though, note that it’s not the fastest VPN we’ve tested, but in terms of latency, it managed to keep our ping low and lags at a minimum while gaming on Xbox.
What We Like
Affordable monthly and annual subscriptions
Greater-than-average speeds and low latency
Wide server selection
Reliable and efficient apps
What We Don’t Like
Split tunneling on Windows, Mac, and Android only
No real VPN obfuscation
Mixed customer support experience
Based in the United States (for data-sharing reasons)
Good Performance for Gaming
For most “Roblox” players, though, good speeds and low latency are enough, and that’s what Private Internet Access delivers. In fact, Private Internet Access is also one of our best VPNs for online gaming. We consistently had a good gaming experience when we tested Private Internet Access, with minimal lag and fast download speeds. We did see a slight spike in latency on our Mac, but nothing too concerning. Even on bad days, we were able to access and explore worlds within “Roblox” with no problems. Also, thanks to Private Internet Access’ fast speeds, cooperative play through voice chat was possible.
Server Location Options
One of the things we considered when we chose the best VPNs for “Roblox” was the number of server locations. Private Internet Access focuses heavily on its U.S. servers, so whenever we wanted to play, we could always find a server near us that was not too crowded. That’s one of the reasons why we got good speeds. But with Private Internet Access’ 83 server locations, we think that’ll be the case wherever you are in the world. It has servers in Europe, Australia, Asia, and Africa, and all of them are optimized for 10 Gbps transmissions.
FYI: Private Internet Access doesn’t publicly share its total number of servers anymore, but the last time it shared that information, in 2020, it was over 12,000.
Private Internet Access Pricing
Another great thing about Private Internet Access is its affordable pricing. It’s the cheapest of our three top picks, starting at only $2.19 per month with the two-year plan. In total, that plan costs $56.94, with two months of free service as a bonus for signing up long term. There’s also a six-month plan for $45, which breaks down to $7.50 per month. And of course, there’s a monthly plan that costs $11.99. All of those subscriptions cover up to 10 devices.
How We Ranked the Best Roblox VPNs
We’ve tested dozens of VPNs over the years, but much like “Roblox,” these VPNs are ever-improving. Before writing this review, we retested the best VPNs, keeping in mind the features that “Roblox” players and developers will most likely need. Here’s what went into our decision-making process.
The number of servers available and their locations are vital. You want a VPN with servers that are close to you geographically to keep the latency low, but having servers spread around the world is also advantageous. Additionally, you want a VPN with enough servers so that users can spread out more evenly, preventing network congestion.
We also kept in mind that there are “Roblox” players in countries that are more restrictive in terms of what online content their citizens can access. For such cases, we looked for VPNs that use obfuscation techniques to bypass censorship. These VPNs generally do a much better job at unblocking “Roblox” and other types of content in places where they’re blocked.
As of 2020, the majority of “Roblox” users were minors, so we made sure to include only VPNs with prices that are affordable to that age group or that are less objectionable by their parents. Plus, the VPNs we selected support multiple devices so that parents and other family members can share the subscription. We found that the best VPNs for “Roblox” are the same top-notch VPNs in our list of the best VPNs, so they’re not only for online gaming, but for overall privacy as well.
Security and Privacy
We’ve noticed that security and privacy are major motivating factors for “Roblox” users to use VPNs. After all, the “Roblox” online community isn’t free from bad actors who are taking every possible opportunity to get ahead of others. We selected the best VPNs with the strongest privacy and security features, such as encryption, malware blocking, and a kill switch. And again, these features apply not only to “Roblox,” but to the digital world in general, so they can be helpful even outside “Roblox.”
And that's it for our best VPNs for “Roblox,” but check out these frequently asked questions to learn more.
VPNs likely won’t improve your ping time and connection speed on “Roblox.” In fact, in the tests we performed, using a VPN increased our ping and reduced our internet speed by up to 40 percent. However, there are cases where using a VPN actually improves the connection speed, such as when your ISP is throttling down your internet. With a VPN, the IP address that your ISP sees is changed, potentially bypassing throttles.
Any VPN server works with “Roblox,” but for the best speeds, we recommend using a server closest to you geographically. The closer you are to the server, the less distance your network traffic needs to travel, resulting in better speeds.
“Roblox” doesn’t outright ban VPNs, but a recent update of its terms of service mentions that “using VPNs to mask your location in order to gain unauthorized access to the ‘Roblox’ platform, a specific feature, or another user’s account” is a violation. But if you use VPNs only to play or create experiences like you normally would without a VPN, there shouldn’t be any problems.
Generally, we don’t recommend using free VPNs for “Roblox,” as they are either unsecure or limited in terms of features. If you want a free VPN, some brands like Surfshark offer a seven-day free trial on mobile devices.
